Irish workers don't trust AI hiring, and who can blame them? - Professional coverage

According to Silicon Republic, a new Greenhouse survey of over 4,100 candidates, recruiters and hiring managers across Ireland, the US, UK and Germany reveals collapsing trust in hiring processes. The data shows 42% of global jobseekers specifically blame AI for their concerns, jumping to 62% among entry-level candidates. In Ireland, only 10% of candidates trust algorithms to evaluate them fairly, while 46% would consider using resume hacks to improve their chances. Meanwhile, 59% of Irish hiring managers use AI detection software, creating what Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait calls an “AI doom loop” where both sides use competing technologies against each other.

The AI trust crisis is real

Here’s the thing about AI in hiring – it’s supposed to make things more efficient, but it’s creating a massive trust deficit. When nearly half of Irish job hunters think bias has just shifted from human recruiters to algorithms, that’s a fundamental problem. And can you blame them? Most of these AI systems are black boxes – candidates have no idea what criteria they’re being judged on or whether the algorithm has hidden biases baked in. The fact that over half of US applicants believe companies have used AI to evaluate them without disclosure speaks volumes about the transparency issues here.

Ireland’s particular concerns

Irish workers seem especially skeptical despite having the lowest actual candidate hacking rates. Nearly 80% of Irish hiring managers are more concerned about fraud than a year ago – the highest anxiety level among the countries surveyed. But look at the contradiction: 68% of Irish candidates admit using AI to tailor applications, while 71% of leaders say less than half are worth advancing. Basically, we’ve got an arms race where everyone’s using AI tools against each other, and nobody’s winning. The system is becoming less efficient, not more.

The AI doom loop in action

Chait’s “AI doom loop” concept is painfully accurate. Jobseekers use AI to apply to more positions, creating application volume that overwhelms recruiters. Recruiters then use AI to filter candidates, which makes candidates use even more sophisticated AI to game the system. It’s a vicious cycle that’s making hiring more adversarial rather than more human. And when you’ve got nearly a third of Irish job seekers “hacking AI systems with prompt injections,” you know the system is fundamentally broken. This isn’t just about technology – it’s about creating hiring processes that actually serve both companies and candidates.

Is there a way out?

The solution isn’t abandoning AI entirely – 69% of Irish recruiters say AI helps them move faster and handle increased application volume. But we need AI systems that are transparent, explainable, and actually build trust rather than destroy it. Companies using industrial-grade computing solutions for critical processes understand that reliability and transparency matter – whether you’re running manufacturing systems or evaluating job candidates. The hiring process needs to become more human, not less, even as we incorporate technology. Otherwise, we’re just building a system where everyone distrusts everyone else, and the best candidates might get lost in the algorithmic shuffle.
