Tech Giant Retreats Amid Community Resistance
Microsoft has abandoned plans for a major data center development in Caledonia, Wisconsin, following significant community pushback against the 244-acre project. The company confirmed it will not proceed with the proposed site but maintains its commitment to establishing a presence in southeastern Wisconsin.
In a statement to Gizmodo, Microsoft explained: “Based on the community feedback we heard, we have chosen not to move forward with this site; we remain committed to investing in Southeast Wisconsin and look forward to working with the Village of Caledonia and Racine County leaders to identify a site that aligns with community priorities.”
Project Nova Details and Local Concerns
The planned facility, known internally as Project Nova, would have featured three data center buildings and a 15-acre electrical substation near the We Energies Oak Creek Power Plant. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, this would have marked Microsoft’s third data center development in Wisconsin.
Local opposition organized quickly, with residents launching a “Stop Project Nova” campaign highlighting multiple concerns:

- Light pollution from the massive facility
- Environmental impact on Lake Michigan water resources
Fox 6 Milwaukee reported that more than 100 residents attended a September public meeting to voice environmental concerns, particularly regarding the project’s potential water usage from the Great Lake.

Caledonia joins a small but growing number of communities successfully challenging major tech infrastructure projects. In September, Google withdrew a rezoning proposal for a 468-acre data center in Indianapolis following similar local opposition.
