Microsoft Tests Animated AI Portraits to Humanize Copilot Conversations

Microsoft‘s New AI Experiment: Chat with Digital Portraits via Copilot

Microsoft is testing a new experimental feature called “Portraits” for its Copilot AI assistant, designed to make voice interactions feel more natural by letting users converse with an animated digital portrait. Announced by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, the feature responds to user feedback indicating that people prefer talking to a face during voice interactions.

How Copilot Portraits Differs from Previous Features

While Microsoft previously introduced Copilot Appearance for chatting with animated avatars, Portraits appears to be a simpler, 2D version focused on realistic facial representations rather than whimsical characters. Both features are part of Copilot Labs, where Microsoft trials experimental AI capabilities before wider release.

Experimental Nature and Availability

Suleyman emphasized that Portraits is “very much a prototype” to study user comfort levels with AI conversations. Currently accessible primarily to Copilot Pro subscribers paying $20 monthly, the feature joins other Labs tools like 2D-to-3D image conversion and screen-sharing capabilities. However, rollout is gradual, so even subscribers might not see it immediately.

This development follows earlier reporting on Microsoft’s efforts to humanize AI interactions, highlighting the company’s ongoing exploration of how visual elements like avatars and portraits impact user experience. Early testers can share whether animated portraits make Copilot conversations feel more authentic as Microsoft continues refining its AI assistant’s personality.
