The development team behind Capcom‘s upcoming sci-fi action game Pragmata has revealed they didn’t anticipate how significantly artificial intelligence would dominate real-world conversations when they first conceived their game’s antagonist AI. During Tokyo Game Show 2025 interviews, game director Cho Yonghee and producer Naoto Oyama expressed surprise at how quickly reality has caught up with their fictional narrative.

Early Development Decisions

Oyama explained that the core concept of Pragmata’s hostile AI was established very early in development. “We had this sort of the idea of the AI in the game locked down very early in the development,” he noted, referencing the concept trailer released years prior. The team had solidified their vision before real-world AI advancements accelerated at their current remarkable pace.

Rapid Technological Advancement

Yonghee admitted the development team couldn’t have predicted current AI trends. “We really couldn’t predict that AI would be this big from where we started,” he said. “The real life AI’s progression has been so fast that it’s perhaps overtaken what we have in the game right now.” This rapid advancement means that some elements in Pragmata might appear less extraordinary compared to actual AI developments.

Story Remains Unchanged

Despite real-world parallels, Oyama emphasized that external AI developments haven’t altered Pragmata’s narrative. The story follows spacefarer Hugh Williams partnering with android Diana to combat a hostile AI controlling a lunar space station. The core plot remains faithful to their original vision, unaffected by recent technological breakthroughs.

Future Setting Meets Present Reality

Oyama reflected on the interesting timing, noting “We created to be in the near future, but the future has come closer.” Yonghee added an intriguing perspective about terminology evolution, suggesting that by the time Pragmata’s setting becomes reality, “people are not using the word AI even anymore.”
