Winde observed that while most batteries are manufactured in China and South Korea, the essential metals for them are mined in sub-Saharan Africa. “Why don’t we make batteries here?” he asked rhetorically. “The next step must be the manufacturing of batteries here.” Establishing local battery manufacturing would capture more value from the continent’s natural resources and create a robust new industry.
