Major AI Infrastructure Expansion
In a significant move that underscores the accelerating demand for artificial intelligence computing power, Nscale has signed an expanded AI infrastructure agreement with Microsoft valued at approximately $14 billion. The deal represents one of the largest AI infrastructure deployments announced this year and will see Nscale supply Microsoft with access to an additional 116,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs across data centers in the United States and Europe. US Deployment: Repurposed Bitcoin Mining Facility
The centerpiece of the expanded agreement is a 240MW data center facility in Barstow, Texas, where Nscale will deploy 104,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs for Microsoft. Interestingly, the deployment will utilize a facility that Nscale is leasing from Bitcoin miner Ionic Digital, representing a notable example of infrastructure transitioning from cryptocurrency mining to AI computing.
According to Nscale, the phased delivery of Nvidia AI infrastructure services to Microsoft will begin in the third quarter of 2026. The company noted that while the announced capacity is 240MW, Ionic’s documentation suggests the actual capacity may be 234MW. The Texas facility represents just the beginning of Nscale’s ambitious expansion plans, with the company aiming to scale its footprint to 1.2GW over time. Microsoft holds an option on a second phase of 700MW starting in late 2027.
European Expansion Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Complementing the US deployment, Nscale will deliver up to 12,600 GB300 GPUs at the Start Campus data center in Sines, Portugal, located south of Lisbon. The Portuguese deployment is scheduled to be operational by the first quarter of 2026. The Start Campus project has faced challenges, including involvement in a corruption scandal that led to the collapse of the Portuguese government and the arrest of multiple Start Campus executives.
However, the project has continued moving forward, with charges against former CEO Afonso Salema being dropped and Robert Dunn now serving as permanent CEO. The campus eventually plans to comprise six buildings, with the SIN01 facility already operational since January 2025. This European expansion occurs as global technology supply chains face increasing scrutiny amid shifting trade patterns.
