European cloud and data center firm OVHcloud has unveiled what it describes as a groundbreaking cooling architecture for its global data center operations. According to reports, the new OVHcloud Smart Datacenter combines innovative industrial designs with artificial intelligence capabilities to significantly reduce both power and water consumption.

The company states that this new approach can reduce water consumption by up to 30 percent and cooling electricity consumption by up to 50 percent. These efficiency gains come at a critical time as the data center industry faces increasing pressure to address environmental concerns while meeting growing computational demands.

Integrated Cooling System Design

Miroslaw Klaba, OVHcloud R&D director, explained the significance of the development: “We are delighted to unveil a new generation of evaporative cooling solutions, including Smart Racks. With our one integrated cooling loop design, we are paving the way for Smart Datacenters that leverage our most advanced technologies as well as artificial intelligence to tackle what was once an impossible equation.”

The fifth-generation server rack design, developed over the past two years, features a novel server layout where clusters of servers are connected in series for cooling purposes, while maintaining parallel organization for maintenance accessibility. This hybrid approach represents a significant departure from traditional cooling methodologies.

Direct-to-Chip Cooling Innovation

Hardware components including CPUs and GPUs are cooled through direct-to-chip waterblocks specifically designed by OVHcloud engineers. The system dissipates heat through a closed-loop water circuit that extends to a single cooling loop across the entire data center facility, creating a more efficient thermal management solution.

The new cooling distribution units (CDUs) are reportedly 50 percent smaller than previous generations and are positioned outside the rack. Each unit can cool multiple rows of racks and incorporates more than 30 sensors that continuously monitor various parameters including pressure, speed, and water temperature.

AI-Powered Adaptive Cooling

Analysts suggest the sensor network represents a significant advancement in data center management technology. The system can automatically adjust cooling settings in real time based on server workloads, optimizing energy consumption dynamically rather than operating at fixed cooling levels regardless of computational demand.

The external Smart Dry Cooler component now occupies half the space of previous generations and utilizes half the number of fans, contributing substantially to the reported 50 percent reduction in cooling power consumption. This streamlined design reflects broader industry developments toward more compact and efficient infrastructure.

Global Deployment Underway

New OVHcloud Smart Racks are currently being deployed at the company’s Roubaix data center in France, where a room containing nearly 60 racks and 2,000 servers is being equipped with the new cooling system. The complete system is expected to be rolled out across OVHcloud’s global data center network in the coming months.

OVHcloud operates more than 40 core data centers across France, Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany, Poland, Singapore, India, Italy, and the United Kingdom, with additional Edge locations in approximately 28 metropolitan areas worldwide. This expansion aligns with market trends toward distributed computing infrastructure.
