Uber Diversifies Driver Earnings with AI Task Platform
Uber Technologies Inc. is reportedly expanding its ridesharing company services to include artificial intelligence data labeling tasks for drivers during non-driving hours, according to company announcements made at their Only on Uber 2025 conference. The new initiative will allow drivers to complete small online jobs through Uber’s app when they’re not transporting passengers or delivering food.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed the program during Thursday’s event, stating that the company’s chief executive officer and leadership team developed the concept after extensive feedback sessions. “We held more than 60 Crew sessions with over 100 Uber team members, gathering hundreds of hours of feedback on everything from product design to policy changes,” Khosrowshahi said in prepared remarks.
AI Solutions Group Pilots Data Labeling Tasks
The pilot program, operated through Uber’s AI Solutions Group, will enable drivers to complete tasks such as “uploading photos to help train AI models,” which sources indicate is already being tested in Indian markets. According to company spokesperson Meghan Casserly, another example includes “recording themselves speaking in certain languages or accents (following prompts).”
Analysts suggest the move positions Uber to compete with established platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and Upwork in the growing gig economy data labeling space. The report states that pay for tasks will vary based on complexity and estimated completion time, with drivers able to see compensation amounts before accepting assignments.

In addition to the AI task program, Uber announced the official rollout of its women rider preference feature that pairs women drivers and riders through enhanced safety initiatives. The service, now expanding to several U.S. cities, has reportedly been used on more than 100 million trips worldwide where already implemented.
The company also introduced new features allowing all drivers to set rider rating preferences and implemented a delayed ride guarantee ensuring higher payouts for trips taking more than five minutes longer than estimated. According to reports, additional costs may sometimes be passed to riders depending on delay circumstances.
